Roommates is an online matching service for people with disabilities and their family members, as well as for others in the disability field. It is a safe method to find others seeking a housing solution.  No identifying information is shared with anyone until they have been approved. When you create a listing on Roommates and someone emails you, it’s then up to the two of you to connect with each other. It is highly recommended when meeting anyone for the first time that you set up your first meeting in a safe public space and bring a friend or relative with you.

How to use Roommates

If you are looking for one of more roommates to partner with to rent an apartment or buy a house, then this service might be of help to you.  It can help in two ways:

 1) You can search the listings that others have placed; or
 2) You can create a listing for others to see. No personal identification like names and street addresses are included in the postings.

Step 1 – Register

Click “Sign Up” (above) to register.  Follow the instructions presented.  After answering all the questions, click “Send”.  There may be some delay in approving your registration because we are taking precautions to insure this service is as safe as possible You will receive an email confirming your registration and password. After you have been approved all you need do on future visits to Roommates is to click “Sign In”.

Step 2 - How to view other people’s ads

We call this “Searching”.  See the header at the top of page once you sign in.  Notice that you can search for “Roommates” or “Vacancies.”

“Roommates” are people with disabilities looking to partner with another person in order to rent or buy an apartment or home.

“Vacancies” are listings by people with disabilities and/or family members who have an apartment, house or other housing option that they want to offer to a person with a disability.

When you click either “Search Roommates ” or “Search Vacancies” you will be asked about location, age, and a number of other important preferences regarding the roommate or home you are searching for.  When you click “Search” at the bottom of the page you will see all the listings that agree with your answers.  At this point you can review all the details in each listing.

If you want to contact the person who created the posting to get more information, simply click “Send Email" then type in your email address and your question. The person will receive your message and can respond to you.

Step 3 - How to create a listing

If you’re ready to create a listing, first Click “Sign In” and enter your email address and password.  Remember that you need to register and get a password first.  Once you sign in, you will see “List a Vacancy” and  “List a Roommate” at the top of the next screen.  After you click on one of these options, you can easily fill in all the information for your posting.

What if my state isn't listed?
